LCDQ Novel Interiors: DORIAN GRAY

LCDQ (La Cienega Design Quarter) LEGENDS Event 2014

Each year, LEGENDS embraces an overarching theme that is expressed in the LCDQ showroom and shop window displays orchestrated by designers from around the world. The theme for 2014 – Novel Interiors: Storytelling by Design – is already resonating through the design community as the LCDQ invites esteemed designers to create LEGEND-ary windows.

The experience was incredible and directly related to the theme of this year's LEGENDS, "NOVEL INTERIORS Storytelling by Design". Diving into The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde allowed us to create his detailed world where a young man whose desire to maintain his youth and beauty renders his soul irrevocably damaged. When Dorian expresses a desire for his portrait to grow old and wither in his stead, he is shocked to find his wish has been granted. As he gets older, it is his picture that ages physically and not him. By virtue of his narcissism, wanton hedonism, and disregard for others, his painted representation rots and decays, revealing the extent of his moral corruption. In the end, the picture is restored to its original beauty when Dorian attempts to destroy it and is instead found lying on the ground, old and ugly as he should have been, dead.

To tell the story, we incorporated music into our design, it lured visitors who heard it from a distance. The haunting piano, operatic tenor and orchestrated strings by composer Charlie Mole managed to drown out the street noise while pulling visitors inside the window. Alongside our Chrome Griffin Sofa in Mr. Gray's Study was his painting with a sword pierced through it. The painting was of the young and beautiful Dorian Gray as when it was first painted many years prior. Now, a lifeless and decaying body lay over our Chrome Lion Chair dead.

The transformation of Dorian Gray was told through a portrait of both Paul and myself framed over our Chrome Griffin Fireplace. A golden energy of light would surround the frame while our faces began to glow. Then drastically, we transformed into old and decaying versions of ourselves before returning back to our original state.

Many thanks to Mr. Wilde for the incredible story he told.
